During Prohibition, the border between the US and Mexico is a booming place, full of people who’ve fled the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution and others who are seeking their fortunes. It’s also home to smugglers and lechuzas—witches who transform into owls and live outside of normal society.

 

Carmen is an adventurous young woman whose family is pressuring her to settle down and get married. When she meets the lechuza Paloma at a Halloween party, she begs to be taken on as an apprentice to escape her fate. But life as a witch isn’t as idyllic as she imagined—especially once both the local law enforcement and crime syndicate decide to use lechuzas as scapegoats to cover up their collusion.
